Angela Kinsey and Ellie Kemper Talk Office Webisodes and Jim and Pam's Baby!
Reported by Kristen - 05:08 PM 2010.02.28
In its sixth season, fans of NBC’s The Office have been through a lot with the zany characters at Dunder-Mifflin, but this season is set to change everything with the introduction of a new character: a baby! Resident lovebirds Jim (John Krasinski) and Pam (Jenna Fischer) are expecting and the cast couldn’t be happier! Stars Angela Kinsey and Ellie Kemper sat down to talk about the show’s new webisodes hitting NBC.com March 4th, and what’s in store for Jim and Pam as the birth of their child approaches.NBC.com has always had exclusive and unique content available on their website for fans of their show. Heroes had exclusive webisodes dealing with different characters running through their whole, recently-ended, season a few months back. Now NBC is unveiling exclusive web episodes of The Office featuring both Kemper and Kinsey to add more laughter to the series. Kemper, who plays receptionist Erin Hannon, enjoyed the fact that “there’s more room to play” with shortened, web-content like this this. Kinsey, who plays the feisty Angela Martin, also enjoyed the freedom that comes with additional episodes calling it “a new genre.” Kinsey went into a bit more detail about the experience of filming the episodes and how things have changed from the first few takes explaining, “We came in on our day off…and we had such a small skeleton crew. It felt very free and loose, it felt like something you might have done in college. Now they’re more organized, they’re more structured but there’s still freedom. It feels like we’ve all come in on a day off and it’s a lot of fun.” So does this mean fans can expect some more improvisation and ad-libbing with these shortened episodes? Kinsey says the level is about the same as on the aired series, “We do the script as it’s written but we have a sense of play already on our show.” Both actresses were a bit tight-lipped about what these webisodes would actually show in terms of story, but Kemper says these are strictly “about work stuff, there’s no relationship stuff.” She further described them as “the show after the show” detailing events that might not be shown any other time, or to further character arcs that wouldn’t get the necessary air time. Kemper describes these perfectly as additional scenes that the “documentary” crew filming Dunder-Mifflin couldn’t fit in, “All of these things are happening in this world, it’s almost like the documentary crew had all this footage so usually they stand alone and don’t enter into our main storyline and story arcs.” In addition to the web series, streaming March 4th, NBC.Com will also be providing games, and Twitter “tweets” from characters of the show. It’s unknown if any tweets will be coming from Jim in the delivery room, but there’s no denying fans are eager to see Jim and Pam’s baby. The couple has become iconic in television as one of the sweetest couples in sitcoms today. Kinsey attributes much of that to the writing saying, “The writers are great and I have to say Jenna and Jon are so great at creating this couple. Jenna and Jon have made Jim and Pam a classic television couple. They’re a couple that you want to root for and that makes it very special.” Long-time television fans might see the introduction of a child as a show’s “jumping the shark” point where everything is downhill. Kinsey doesn’t see that happening with this series, “they [the writers] make the characters grow without changing their arc. If you change the character too much, audiences fall out of love” and that is how the actress believes the dynamic between Jim and Pam will remain consistent. There is a level of secrecy with this episode as both Kinsey and Kemper wouldn’t go into too much detail about the episode in question, Kinsey merely proclaiming “I love this baby episode!” Unlike most television births Kinsey says fans will get a dose of reality unlike most sitcoms because of the documentary style of the series. Kemper agrees with this sentiment saying, “It is this monumental event…bringing out moments that other sitcoms might skip over.” An added shot of reality also comes courtesy of Angela Kinsey herself whose daughter is set to turn two in May. Kinsey says she’s gone as far as pulling the writers aside to make sure the birth and subsequent scenes with Pam and her baby are accurate. Kinsey says, “We had a table read for the baby episode, our female writers on the show don’t have children, I pulled [writers] BJ [Novak] and Mindy [Kaling] side. BJ was writing things down and I don’t know what made it or not but I was chatting them all. I’m sure they did their own research.” Ironically while Kinsey is quite to give mommy advice to the writers, don’t expect her character to be giving birth. Kinsey found it hilarious to think of Angela Martin as a mother, “I would love to see her try to nurture a human; I think that would be a lot of fun.” That’s not to say fans won’t see Angela Martin attempt to dress up Jim and Pam’s baby in costume, “My character has a weird thing with photos of babies dressed up” according to Kinsey. Check out NBC.Com March 4th for the new web series and watch The Office that same night to welcome Jim and Pam’s baby! MORE television NEWS |
