Hulu Mulls Charging Fee for Episodes of Popular Shows
Reported by Eyehut - 12:06 PM 2010.01.21

Hulu is considering a change to their business model, reports the Los Angeles Times. Citing unnamed sources who claim they are familiar with the matter, the newspaper Times reports that the site may begin charging for certain content, most likely episodes of the site's most popular shows.

One of the plans include allowing visitors to watch the five most recent episodes of a popular television show but then have to pay $4.99 to view episodes that are older. Hulu believes that in order to make this plan a viable option, they will need to have at least 20 shows available to view. That tally includes both currently airing shows like 24, Burn Notice, and Modern Family, to shows that are no longer on the air.

The site has spent months studying what is the most viable option, and the LA Times reports that it will be about six months from now when a firmer pricing plan has been developed.

Many analysts believe that Hulu is mulling this change because they are planning on expanding to other devices, including Internet-enabled televisions, video game consoles like Microsoft's XBox 360, rather than sitting idle on the computer.

"The whole reason Hulu needs to consider a subscription model is that the long-term play for online video is not to computers; it's to a collection of other devices -- connected TVs, video game consoles," said Forrester Research media analyst James McQuivey.

Hulu was launched approximately two years ago by NBC Universal, News Corp., and Providence Equity Partners to stream their television shows online free of charge. Walt Disney Co. recently joined the board of owners.
