Tyne Daly and Sharon Gless Discuss Burn Notice and the 1980s!
Reported by Kristen - 08:54 PM 2010.01.12
Long-time fans of USA’s hit series Burn Notice probably wouldn’t expect 80’s cop duo Cagney and Lacey to be playing opposite Jeffrey Donovan’s Michael Westen, but they are! While actress Sharon Gless is a familiar face to the show playing Westen’s mother, but look for a reunion with her former co-star Tyne Daly in a mysterious role. Both women sat down to discuss their roles on the USA series, their former crime drama, and the effect of their efforts for women in television. While both women have had successful runs in television, their reunion on Burn Notice is one that has everyone wondering how the creators will pull it off. Interestingly enough the actresses are keeping the intimate details of the reunion close to the vest. Daly confirmed her role as a “low-grade bureaucrat” protective of her position that ends up being conned by a woman offering friendship. Followers of the series might start to wonder if Gless is that conning character as she adamantly stated she was not able to discuss her role in the show, only that she was going undercover with Daly’s character and “it’s very newsworthy that they put me in this time.” Will Gless be an undercover fraud or an undercover partner of sorts, only time will tell once the episode premieres? The actress chimed in to reveal that her and her former co-star share about three or four scenes together, calling them “a great tennis match.” Gless was willing though to discuss her interactions with her on-screen son this season. The actress described a “lovely scene” with Donovan that results from her interactions with Daly’s character. “She loves him and I believe he loves her but there’s a lot of blood under the bridge. There’s a slight distance between them that’s almost becoming because it gives us someplace to go,” confirms the star. Speaking of the show’s star Daly only has the best to say about him, “He was very gracious, he behaved like a television star should when greeting guest stars.” While the two didn’t share much screen time, she did mention that the atmosphere on the set was happy and that “he [Donovan] knew the value of me playing with my erstwhile colleague and he was nice about it.” This is seconded by Gless who mentioned that the cast and crew were incredibly excited to have Daly on the series, whose only requirement for the scripts was that they have “the best jokes.” In terms of the future of the actresses on the series, Gless is set to make some more waves throughout this season although she doesn’t have much knowledge on where she’ll be, “I haven’t seen the new scripts. I know…the very last one they use Madeline a lot.” Many of the questions directed at the two women focused on their breakthrough roles as Cagney and Lacey on the Emmy-winning series of the same name that ran from 1982-1988. Daly eloquently discusses the impact of the show saying, “Television serves very briefly in its own time. We hit a very lucky time where we could reflect some of the influences that were happening in the society.” Gless seconds that, saying the two “developed something” with the series which has lead to a long-running friendship between the two. Gless mentions times of laughter and chatting in the make-up trailer before filming their Burn Notice scenes. This is reminiscent of their time on the 80’s series where “we laughed everyday and there were some intense days,” according to Daly who sums everything up with “We play very easy together, we have a good time.” With recent remakes and changes in television series one has to wonder about the impact the two actresses crafted with their ground-breaking series, a show format that is confirmed by both actresses as one that hasn’t been replicated yet, Daly wonders if “we did it so well in the first place they hesitate to copy it.” There is a rumor about producer Jerry Bruckheimer possibly doing a remake or something having to do with two female cops, but as of right now nothing’s been confirmed. The two hope to replicate some of the camaraderie and magic they had with their former series, Daly says, “It seems to be a good working place, I don’t know if we can replicate what we did in our prime. The two of us are continuing to do what we do and if we do it with some kind of class, I’m grateful for that.” An interesting topic the two discussed was female roles in television and their place in it. While Daly says the two served well in their time period, whether they’ve succeeded in the current century is anyone’s guess. Gless elaborates more saying, “There are some wonderful shows on that star wonderful women. There’s never been a format like Cagney and Lacey again with two sharing it. I hope we had some impact, there are some wonderful women now in strong roles.” Tyne Daly and Sharon Gless team up in the USA series Burn Notice, premiering January 21st at 10pm.
