Star Trek 2 Villain Revealed *Spoilers*
Reported by Jay Cochran - 11:47 AM 2012.07.09

While making the press rounds promoting his new film Dredd, actor Karl Urban, who plays Dr. McCoy in the new Star Trek movies, let it slip that the villain for the new film would be Gary Mitchel played by actor Benedict Cumberbatch.

The Mitchel character was originally played by actor Gary Lockwood in the second pilot episode for the Original Star Trek television series. He played a member of the Enterprise crew and a close friend of Kirk from the academy days. Mitchel was the one who actually introduced Kirk to Carol Marcus, the mother of Kirk's son David as seen in Star Trek 2 The Wrath of Khan. During the episode which was titled "Where No Man Has Gone Before," Mitchel is endowed with fantastic powers while the Enterprise attempts to breach a great barrier at the end of the Galaxy. The powers soon corrupt Mitchel and Kirk is forced to have to kill his friend in order to save his ship and crew. The source of Mitchel's powers were never really revealed though some Star Trek novels have linked them back to the Q Continuum.

It is unclear how close the new movie will follow the original storyline, but it will be interesting to see how J.J. Abrams handles this retelling of the Mitchel character for the new Star Trek Universe.
