AVATAR Gets A Dear John Letter At The Box Office This Weekend

“Dear John” has done what so many others failed to do, knock “AVATAR” out of the #1 spot of the weekend domestic Box Office top 10. “Dear John” is a romantic drama starring Channing Tatum which opened this weekend with an estimated take of $32.4 million. “AVATAR”, which held the number 1 spot for 6 weeks in a row, dropped to number 2 with an estimated take of $23.6 million making its total domestic take $630,093,323. Earlier this week, “AVATAR” finally broke the box office domestic record, previously held by “Titanic”, taking in $600.8 million and pulled in 9 Oscar nominations for the 82nd Academy Awards including a nomination for Best Picture.

John Travolta’s action flick “From Paris with Love” opened at number 3 this weekend with an estimated take of $8.1 million.

Mel Gibson’s thriller “Edge of Darkness” fell to number 4 in its second week with an estimated take of $7 million.

The twelve estimated top-producing motion pictures for the weekend, per data collected as of Sunday, February 7, 2010 include:

1. Dear John: $32,400,000
2. Avatar: $23,600,000
3. From Paris With Love: $8,120,000
4. Edge Of Darkness: $7,005,000
5. Tooth Fairy: $6,500,000
6. When In Rome: $5,504,000
7. The Book Of Eli: $4,835,000
8. Crazy Heart: $3,650,000
9. Legion: $3,400,000
10. Sherlock Holmes: $2,630,000
11. The Blind Side: $2,600,000
12. Up In The Air: $2,350,000
