AVATAR Crushes Mel Gibson At The Box Office This Weekend
Reported by Jay Cochran - 03:52 PM 2010.01.31

“AVATAR” continues its reign at the U.S. Box Office, continuing to hold the number 1 spot this week and beating out Mel Gibson’s new thriller “Edge of Darkness”. “AVATAR” brought in an additional $30 million this weekend, bringing its domestic take to $594,472,287 and moving it closer to the $601M domestic box office record currently held by “Titanic”.

As mentioned above, Mel Gibson’s new thriller didn’t fare so well this weekend with an estimated total of $17,120,000 despite fairly good reviews. One has to wonder how much credibility Mel has left in Hollywood as a box-office draw after this and if his public image will ever be able to really recover after his anti-Semitic outburst back in 2006.

For other movies that opened this weekend, Disney’s “When In Rome” starring Kristen Bell, Josh Duhamel and Anjelica Huston opened in the number 3 spot with an estimated take of $12 million.

Looking ahead at movies that could possibly knock “AVATAR” from number 1, John Travolta’s new action flick “From Paris With Love” opens next weekend and might have a shot. Only time will tell but at the moment, “AVATAR” seems unbeatable.

The twelve estimated top-producing motion pictures for the weekend, per data collected as of Sunday, January 31, 2010 include:

1. Avatar: $30,000,000
2. Edge Of Darkness: $17,120,000
