AVATAR Beats Sherlock Holmes For #1 This Holiday Weekend

James Cameron’s “AVATAR” has another strong showing for its second weekend bringing in an estimated $75 million. “Sherlock Holmes” which stars Robert Downey Jr. & Jude Law opened at number 2 with a pretty strong showing taking in an estimated $65 million. With Warner Bros. already talking about a sequel, it looks like Downey has his second franchise film under his belt (Iron Man being the other one). For the kids there was “Alvin and The Chipmunks: The Squeakquel” which came in at 3rd with an estimated $50 million. The only movie to open this weekend without a strong showing was The Weinstein Co. musical "Nine," which came at #8 with an estimated $5.5 million.

The twelve estimated top-producing motion pictures for the weekend, per data collected as of Sunday, December 27, 2009 include:

1. Avatar: $75,000,000
2. Sherlock Holmes: $65,380,000
