JayC's Pick For Best Movie Of 2009
Reported by Jay Cochran - 07:32 PM 2009.12.27

As 2009 comes to an end, I frequently am asked what I think the best movie of the year was. Although it is only my opinion, I undoubtedly have to say this year’s winner is J.J Abrams’ Star Trek.

Had you asked me a year ago if I thought Star Trek would make my pick as best movie for 2009, I would have said no way. Trying to re-launch a franchise steeped in so much history and with such a huge following is a daunting task not to mention having to replace the legendary actors who played those characters. Yet somehow Abrams somehow not only pulled it off but he did it very well. He madeStar Trek something viewers new and old to the franchise could enjoy with lots of action, fantastic special effects and most importantly, great casting.

Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Karl Urban all did fantastic jobs portraying Kirk, Spock and McCoy by embodying the essence of what make those characters so good, while respecting but not trying to impersonate the actors who originated these characters.

Abrams also did a fantastic job of re-creating the classic look with a modern twist. The visuals of the new Enterprise at times where truly breathtaking, and the movie score by Michael Giacchino was fantastic (when you look at legendary composers like Jerry Goldsmith for previous Trek movies, this is very important).

In a decade that has become known for franchise re-launches, some good like Batman, some not; I think it’s safe to say that Star Trek is in good hands with J.J. Abrams, and I look forward to many more great Star Trek movies in the years to come.
