Looking At Jennifer's Body (coming on DVD December 29)
Reported by Matt Grace - 03:47 PM 2009.12.17
A monster movie by the writer of Juno (Diablo Cody)? I was definitely there!!! I enjoyed Juno a lot, and looked forward to seeing how Cody would work within the horror genre. I imagined monster fetuses chomping their way out of the womb...(Yeah I know, it's been done, but ONE MORE TIME PLEASE!!!) Even without the monster fetuses, I'm happy to say, Cody has made a really cool film here that defies categorization. There are MANY LEVELS to Jennifer's Body...although horror, it's also a case study in sex & obsessive love. The movie has got a viciousness that has been sorely lacking in horror films of late, and I enjoyed that very much. Bottom line: Jennifer's Body is a FUN ride. A quick synopsis...Two teenage girls are best friends (although the relationship is VERY lopsided). One girl, Jennifer (Megan Fox) is totally self absorbed, and Needy (Amanda Seyfried), the other girl is completely obsessed (to the point of being in love) with Jennifer (Needy is a VERY descriptive nickname for this character). The two go to see an evil indie band (Low Shoulder), who try to sacrifice Jennifer to Satan so they can become big stars, but accidentally turn her into a blood (and flesh) thirsty demon (why does this ALWAY happen with indie bands???). The rest of the film shows Jennifer killing people, and Needy slowly coming to the realization that the person she loves, Jennifer, is a monster. Who does Jennifer kill? Being a popular cheerleader, she has no problem luring lots of teenage boys to their doom. Jocks, goth boys, they all lust after Jennifer. She just wants to eat them, however, and terrify them....the more terrified they are of her, the more she enjoys the killing. Jennifer's Body is a rarity in horror films, as females have the upper hand, and males are shown to be the weaker sex (just like in real life your reviewer sadly says). Needy's boyfriend Chip (played by Johnny Simmons) loves her, but realizes that although Needy cares for him, her real love is for Jennifer. He has no power at all over Jennifer, and no real power or sway over Needy, and watches helplessly as Needy loses herself because of her obsession of Jennifer. Jennifer's Body has a serious sexual undercurrent. Jennifer OOZES with sex, from the way she walks, to the way she talks. She lures her victims in with the possibility of sex, and then CHOMP!!! There is no sexual payoff with Jennifer for any of the men in the movie...only pain and death (haven't we all had a relationship like that?). The only male/female sex is between Needy and her boyfriend Chip, and is one of the creepier scenes in the movie due to Needy's imagining of blood and horror while the act is going on (I don't think she wanted to enjoy sex with anyone else, because she was in love with Jennifer). The only sexual scene involving Jennifer is an INTERESTING kissing scene between Jennifer & Needy that shows the screwed up relationship between them pretty well (Needy seems to be hungering for the kiss, and Jennifer's brush off at the end of the scene is when Needy finally realizes she will never get the love she needs from Jennifer). Once the break with Jennifer happens, it's Needy that triumphs, the ordinary girl over the popular one (albeit after Jennifer has taken most of her friends away, so obviously it's a pretty bittersweet triumph!). I'm not sure if the intense anger that Needy has towards Jennifer was due to her friends being killed off, or being spurned, but either way, the anger leads to a strong & bloody climactic scene. The movie doesn't end here however, there is a surprise ending that shows just how much Needy has been empowered (although the action takes place offscreen, Needy ties up some loose ends just fine thank you!). With tough box office numbers, there may not be a sequel to Jennifer's Body , which is too bad...I for one would like to see where Needy ends up. It was cool seeing a movie with strong female protagonists, and I enjoyed Needy's journey to empowerment. Check out Jennifer's Body, a cool & unique horror film, the DVD will released on December 29th on 20th Century Fox. You will be rewarded with repeated viewings.
