Fox Brings Never Before Released MGM Classics to DVD
Reported by Jay Cochran - 08:17 AM 2009.11.30

CreateSpace, part of the Amazon.com, Inc. group of companies, today announced that Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment LLC (TCFHE) is using the CreateSpace DVD On-Demand service to offer a selection of never before released classic films and TV shows from the MGM library.

The collaboration provides fans easy access to classic films and TV shows available for sale on Amazon.com. The first wave of award-winning titles available includes 1953’s Return to Paradise, starring Oscar winner Gary Cooper; the 1956 film Trapeze, directed by Oscar winner Carol Reed and starring Oscar winning actor Burt Lancaster; and Two for the Seesaw (1962), which was nominated for two Academy Awards® and stars Oscar nominee Robert Mitchum and Oscar winner Shirley MacLaine.

Additional titles to be made available using CreateSpace’s DVD On-Demand service include 1966’s The Group, directed by Sidney Lumet; Director Joan Micklin Silver’s 1977 counterculture film, Between The Lines; 1985’s Dreamchild, starring Alice Liddell; 1988’s Far North, written and directed by Sam Shepard (also his directorial debut); 1991’s action-packed film Chains of Gold starring John Travolta; Late for Dinner, a 1991 comedy starring Marcia Gay Harden and Janeane Garofalo; 1993’s Rich in Love with an all-star cast including Albert Finney, Jill Clayburgh, Ethan Hawke and Kyle MacLachlan; 1997’s Welcome to Woop Woop, writer-director Stephan Elliott’s follow-up film to the cult favorite, The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and the 1999 comedy A Fish in the Bathtub starring real-life husband and wife team Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara.

The TV series being made available initially are 1997’s Poltergeist Season 2 and 2003’s Jeremiah Season 2.

A special introductory video by world-renowned and award-winning actor, director, writer, producer and film historian Peter Bogdanovich will be available online at Amazon.com for each of these initial films. “The idea of having these titles made on demand exclusively by CreateSpace allows classic films to be discovered by a new audience that may not otherwise be exposed to them,” notes Bogdanovich.

“MGM has a vast library of classic films and TV shows, which up until now have never been available for purchase,” said Eric Doctorow, general manager MGM Worldwide at Fox. “Working with CreateSpace gives us the opportunity to preserve and release some of these films and TV shows for fans everywhere.”

“CreateSpace is pleased to bring rare classic films from MGM’s expansive library back to life so that they are easily accessible to fans,” said Dana LoPiccolo-Giles, managing director of CreateSpace. “With CreateSpace’s on-demand technology and online distribution solution – which eliminates the need for large replication runs and inventory – we are able to offer studios a cost-efficient, low-risk platform to release titles that otherwise may never have been available through more traditional methods.”
